The Department of Mechanical Engineering has highly qualified and well experienced Faculty Members with well-equipped Labs. Computer-aided learning packages on various subjects are available for self-learning. Industrial visits are arranged every 6 months to gain practical exposure about the subjects in depth.
Mechanical Engineers receive excellent job prospects in industries relating to Manufacturing, Automobile, Power, Aeronautical, and Biotechnology. The future of mechanical engineering lies not only in the core sectors of energy, manufacturing, design, transportation and healthcare but also in emerging disciplines like nanotechnology, mechatronics and hydrogen engineering. Nanotechnology is going to be the crux of mechanical engineering discipline. Mechatronics is an area that could witness a giant leap in the coming years.
Strength of Materials Lab
This laboratory provides knowledge on materials strength, stress, hardness and modulus rigidity. The laboratory is equipped with key machines such as the Universal Testing Machine, Torsion Testing, Brinnell Hardness, Testing Machine and Spring Testing machine.
Fluid Mechanics Lab and Machinery Lab
The laboratory provides a major source for understanding the working of hydraulic machines like pumps and turbines etc. It gives brief idea about losses in pipes during the fluid flow and efficiency and performance of pumps and turbines. Also it has all the three types of turbines low head, medium and high head turbines of large size. Students can learn performance of the turbines for different load conditions. It has centrifugal, submersible and reciprocating pumps. The performance of pumps is studied.
Thermal Laboratory consists of two sections namely Engine laboratory and Heat Transfer laboratory. Engine laboratory consists of all the engine experimental setups like Four stroke petrol engine cut section model, Two stroke petrol engine cut section model, Four stroke diesel engine cut section model, Multi cylinder petrol engine test rig, Twin cylinder diesel engine test rig, Single cylinder diesel engine test rig, and Two stroke petrol engine test rig. The lab also has compressor testing rig which can be used for performance testing of compressor and leakage test. Air conditioning test set up like vapor compression refrigeration and LPG refrigerator test rig is used to study the performance of refrigerator systems.
The highlight of the laboratory is the engine that can run on non edible vegetable oil and hydrogen fuel. It can be run on any combination of vegetable oil and hydrogen fuel mix. The engine is loaded with eddy current dynamometer. This experimental set up is part of AICTE funded project in the year 2007-2009 under Research Promotion Scheme.
Heat transfer Laboratory consists of all the three modes( Conduction, Convection and Radiation) of Heat transfer equipments , This will help the students to Know the subject Heat and mass Transfer in a practical approach, also how the variations taking place by changing any one property.
The laboratory provides a major source for understanding the working of hydraulic and pneumatic actuators in different applications. Simulation of hydraulic and pneumatic circuits is done using Hydrosim and Pnuemosim softwares. Hydraulic power pack gives the knowledge about the force calculation and velocity calculation.
The laboratory is equipped for dimensional metrology such as gauges and instrumentation used in making precision linear, geometric form and surface finish measurements. It is also equipped with a wide assortment of plug, ring, and snap gauges. These facilities are available for both teaching and research. The Metrology Lab familiarizes the students with the system and procedure of conducting measurements including linear measurements, measurement of angles, diameter, thread profile, gear profile, effective diameter, surface roughness, flatness, and etc.The lab has facilities with precision and accurate measuring instruments like Profile Projector, Tool Makers Microscope, auto collimator etc.
CAD and CAM Laboratories
Computer aided design (CAD) is the use of computer technology for the purpose of design and design documentation. CAD software provides the user with input tools for the purpose of drafting. CAD may be used to design curves, figures in two dimensional space, or curved surfaces and solids in three dimensional space. CAD is an important industrial art used extensively in many applications, including automotive, ship building, aerospace, architectural designs and industrial designs. CAD has been the major driving force for research in computational geometry, computer graphics in discrete differential geometry.
Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) is the use of computer software to control machine tools and related machinery in manufacturing of work pieces. Its primary purpose is to create faster production process and components and tooling with a more precise dimension and material consistency while simultaneously reducing energy consumption. CAM is subsequent computer aided process after computer aided design and computer aided engineering as the model generated in CAD and CAE can be input into CAM software which controls the machine tools.
